Privacy policy

Parla is a Shopify app operated by Zaiq, South Africa ("we"). This policy explains what the app accesses, why, and what happens to it. Last updated: 5 October 2026.

What the app accesses

When a store installs the app, Shopify gives it access to the store's own content so it can translate it: products and their options and variants, collections, pages, blogs and articles, navigation menus, policies, metafields and metaobjects, theme text, SEO titles and descriptions, image alt text, URL handles (only if the merchant turns this on), the store's languages and markets, and existing translations. When the merchant runs the store health check, the app also reads the store's storefront pages, as a shopper's browser would, to find text that isn't translated yet. If the online store has a password (development stores always do, and so do stores that haven't opened yet), the merchant can enter the storefront password for a check. The app uses it only during that check, to open the storefront the way the store's own password page does; it is kept in memory while the check runs and is never stored or logged.

The app does not access customers, orders, checkouts or payment details. It stores no customer personal data.

What we store

  • The store's domain and the access token Shopify issues for the app.
  • The merchant's app settings: plan, automatic sync, URL handle translation, tone of voice.
  • The glossary terms the merchant enters.
  • Records of translation runs (language, progress, word counts, errors) and of fields the merchant edited by hand, so automatic updates leave them alone.
  • Monthly word counts and the cost of translation, for billing and fair use.
  • The latest store health check: the storefront pages it checked and short pieces of text found on them, until the next check replaces them.
  • If the merchant imports translations from a file (for example an export from another translation app): the texts read from the file and the result of the import, until the next import replaces them.

Translations themselves are saved in the merchant's Shopify store, not in our database. A storefront password entered for the store health check is not stored either: it is used only during that check, kept in memory, and never written to our database or logs.

How content is translated

To produce a store's translations, the text being translated (product and store content, never customer data) is sent to our AI translation provider, OpenRouter, which passes it to the AI model that does the work. We request only model providers that do not collect or train on the data. Store content is used solely to produce that store's translations. It is never used to train AI models, never shared with other stores and never sold.

Who processes data for us

  • OpenRouter, Inc. and the AI model provider it routes to (translation).
  • netcup GmbH (runs the app and its database, Germany).
  • Shopify (the platform the app runs on and the billing for paid plans).

How long we keep it

While the app is installed, for as long as the merchant uses it. When a store uninstalls the app, Shopify asks us 48 hours later to erase that store's data, and we delete everything we store for the store: settings, glossary, translation records, edit locks, usage and access tokens. Translations already saved in the store stay in the store; the merchant can remove them in Shopify.

Requests about personal data

Because the app stores no customer data, there is nothing to export or erase when a customer makes a request through a store; we answer Shopify's data requests accordingly. Merchants can ask us about their store's data at hello@zaiq.ai.

Changes

We will update this page when the app's data use changes and show the new date at the top.
